Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?
My name is Zachary Weiner, I am twenty two years old and am a writing addict. I do not follow the mold/stigma of what people think of other authors and writers. I am by far one of the most outgoing, and social individuals I know. I do most of my writing at night, and have penned somewhere around five novels. I typically don’t like questions like this one. It seems so broad and there are just too many things about myself that I just don’t know or can’t sort through, so I’m going to stop here and just answer the rest of the questions without boring you with pages and pages of self absorption.
What are doing now? (Career? Married? Single? Children? Pets? Etc.)
I am single but madly in love with my girlfriend. I am currently searching for a career as I don’t where my novels are headed, and just recently graduated college. I think my dream job would be being a millionaire socialite, but I’m going to wait and see how it all plays out before I make the decision to pursue that avenue. Pets: I have a black lab named Marley.
What is your favorite...
Food: Anything with Teriyaki sauce.
Color: Orange
Sound: I like the little zap static electricity makes.
Taste: Spicy
Person: Jim Morrison
Place: The corners of mind that I only get the occasional glimpse into it. Non-flakey answer: Chicago, it’s a great city.
Memory: The first time I do something new. Anything new. It always leaves a lasting impression.
Article of clothing: Sandals, I don’t leave home without them. When it’s winter, they are deeply missed.
Word: create.
What is your favorite quote and why?
"Pick the delusion that best gets you through the day" Unknown.
There is a very truthful insight presented in this quote. I think we all have delusions about ourselves and the world around us. So many people try and see through these delusions, but why not just cultivate them? In the end it keeps our intrigue and sense of fantasy. Ignorance may not be bliss, but some things are not meant to be constantly poked and prodded.
What is your most favorite quality about yourself?
I have a very empathic understanding with most people. It allows me to make some interesting insights about everybody I meet. In turn I understand most people’s problems, difficult situations etc..
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
I can be pretty stubborn at times. I listen to the beat of my own drummer, and than follow that drummer everywhere.
If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
Disney world. It truly is the happiest place on earth.
Your Writer's Perspective...
What inspires you to write and why?
Everyday situations inspire me to write. Everyday people. There are just so many fascinating things that happen every day that I need to get on paper. I’ll stretch them and put a creative edge into it, but the world is interesting. It deserves to be written about.
What is your favorite genre to write and why?
I’m a huge fan of psychological thrillers. In a lot of instances you allow the reader to enter the minds of the characters and experience what they experience. You not only have plots that stay interesting, but the characters can be developed in out of the ordinary ways.
What is your favorite book and why?
The Godfather. I don’t think there is any other book that has better character development. It pulls off feats of plot that I could never imagine or describe. Plus the story is one that is pretty much a foreign world to me. I think that’s the point of fiction. To take you places where you couldn’t be in the real world.
List your three favorite authors (any genre) and why?
1)Stephen King- His writing flows, tweaks our most primitive fears and they don’t follow the typical archetypes and themes of any other writer out there.
2)Mario Puzo- His sheer ability to capture characters and situations in precise detail.
3) Hunter S Thompson- I think he is by far one of the most colorful figures in the literary world. His writings and style are like no other. I love the sheer sense of freedom he maintains in what he writes. There are no boundaries, no lines to cross.
What do you think makes a writer successful?
I think success is completely subjective. Whether you are making millions or never been published, it’s all about what the writing means to you. For me personally I enjoy everything I write, and have a great time doing it. Is there any greater success than joy?
What is it that makes you successful as a writer?
I love writing. Writing is my drug of choice. As stated above, in my opinion if you can achieve happiness in what you do, you are incredibly successful.
A Writer’s Journey...
What are your goals as a writer?
1) To stay to true to the plots and characters I write about it. When writing fiction I it’s my goal to stay true to my lies. Most fiction writing is sophisticated lying, but the irony is that you have to stay true to your lies.
2) I’d like to eventually be a "Brand name" writer, but as long as I can keep writing, and keep expressing my creativity I’m happy.
3) I’d like to bring my readers into new situations, to let them see through the eyes of my characters and live in their minds a bit..
What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?
Try to be as creative as possible. You don’t need to have a schedule or even an outline, just start writing and have fun with it. Write what you would want to read.
What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?
A sense of escape. A look through the eyes of another, and maybe some insights here and there.
Tell us about your publishing success (book title, genre, publishing date, publishing company or self-publishing)
"City at Night" Suspense novel published by publish America, July 2003- webpage http://www.cityatnight.bravepages.com
"The Experts Speak" Coming out in 2004 through Harper Collins.
How long did it take you to write your book(s) and why?
It took me about three months of intense nightly writing for my title "City at Night" than about a week or two of editing. The original manuscript went quick, it seemed to write itself.
What would you do differently if you had to repeat the same publishing experience?
I would have started promoting earlier. The whole business rests in promotion, a lot of which is done by the author.
What have you learned about the publishing world through your experience?
It’s filled with a lot of sharks, a lot of rejection, but there is no better feeling in the world than seeing your name on something published.
Your Writer's Response...
This is your chance to "Talk-Back" to your readers. What would you like to say to them?
What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing?
The only thing I want to express to readers about my writing is that I truly hope you enjoy reading it as much as I do writing it. When you pick up one of my books, I hope you can find a sense of blissful escape.
