Making of a
Medico
by: Ram Ramakrishnan
The travails and triumphs at the campus, of a medico in the making.
Charming encounters to remember and horrendous ones that are best forgotten.
Synopsis
Madhavi aspires to study medicine, following in the footsteps of her great-grandmother, who was a pioneer in the field in the male-dominated society of the early twentieth century in India. Brought up in a protected environment, she is transformed into a budding medico and experiences all that goes into making this happen. There are incidents of many kinds that she has to confront - some pleasant and others not very so. Madhavi realizes during this journey that there are a lot more things that go into the making of a Medico than what the textbooks and the labs offer, which includes a bit of philosophy, history, linguistics, politics and business management besides the science of medicine. Her grandfather’s advice of “being a bit of chameleon with a conscience” guides her through apparently daunting times.

About the author:
I was born a human;
Of the average kind, a specimen;
Childhood aspirations were aplenty,
To become a yeoman, a swordsman, a bowman;
And I dreaded perchance becoming
A conman, a doorman or a barman;
Youth had its own delusions and dreamt
Of being an airman, a seaman or a showman;
A few talents raised visions
Of leading a life as a craftsman;
Middle-age found me slotted in a niche
And I rose up the ladder to be a helmsman;
But was otherwise essentially a layman;
At times, to frighten children, a bogeyman;
. . . Then there was a call . . .
And I realized that I was only a point of consciousness and no man;
This insight made me a new man;
I glimpsed a realm that was beyond God and Mammon;
Now, some call me a madman,
While others believe I am a shaman;
Being neither, I am just me, a man.
