Lynn Barry (Fillmore, NY) Feelings by Tempie is a book that made me think of VC Andrews' books and how the well to do seem to have a different self serving set of rules and how those rules can destroy many lives in the process. This novel cleverly interweaves interesting story telling with social problems that effect all of society. The ability to inject spiritual truths as well makes the author a three dimensional communicator, in my book. Well done!~ Lynn Barry (Fillmore, NY)

Indeed the author writes an intimate story about injustice. Injustice that is embraced not only by the color of one's skin but the character of one's soul as well. Manerva R. Jones her heroin-quickly recognises so much- but how can one who knows nothing of what lies ahead do? This is indeed an epic tale told in times, which seems to now revisit history in a controversial manner. A manner in which morality shows no mercy. The author skillfully interweaves society's three most controversial entities of religion, politics and sex in a multi-culture nature-involving family values as well as the status quo. This story takes you through an emotional roller coaster but in the end justice is served. This book is family oriented, indeed full of hope for women, men, girls and boys to show that living the right life, coupled with hard work does prevail in the end. I loved this book.~Pierrette Komarek (Philadelphia Penna)

    A Conversation with Tempie...

Writing Feelings became one of the biggest challenges for me and I honestly wasn’t sure if I would ever finish it. Being a first time author I knew there would be dilemmas and obstacles to face. I just had no idea it would happen in my first sentence of my story.

As the author, I had an idea of where I wanted to go with my storyline and had outlined all the chapters. I had my main characters in mind as well as my support characters.

Just as I was writing my first sentence on the first page ten years ago, it happened...I actually witnessed the birth of a fictional character that immediately came alive and took total control. Her soul was born on paper, carrying over fifty years of history that had been kept inside of her. She used the power of the pen to unleash all of the hurt and turmoil that had haunted her soul. The moment her medium brown eyes met on paper and looked into the dark brown eyes of her unknown friend, she became alive. She was no longer a main fictional character, she became Feelings heroine, and she had a very real story to tell. At that point she took complete ownership of the story.

Manerva R. Jones, was not just created she had been unleashed and she came out strong to tell her story. A story which covered the lives of herself as well as so many people she had seen or know or had read about living in a time and a city where racism and injustice was rampant and existed then as well as still being very much alive over fifty years later. An injustice that involved race, gender and status quo. It was just ugly. But she was determined not to tell it ugly. She was determined to tell about this dark, ugly and mean creature but in a loving way.

And so it was a battle for me the author from the very first time I became face to face and met the powerful and ambitious Manerva. All of my ideas and outlines were over powered by the sheer power and determination she brought forth when given the opportunity to finally speak. Thus a sort of dimensional storyline effect immersed. As the author my storyline was fiction and created to allow each of my fictional characters to come alive, interact, present dialogue and action so that hopefully the reader would be satisfied. Manerva on the other hand was a creation of fiction but her stories and life were so real and they were based on a lot of inspired truths. There were actual battles throughout the story where as the author I had to yield to my heroine and remove myself completely and allow her to guide and dictate the story. For an example, when she had the opportunity to tell Dr. Grant off. I had to move and just let her work it. I had no idea what she would say or how she would say it. She had suffered so much and the inner afflictions and scars were there. Her boldness and her ambition to see justice done was her driving force and I knew she would not stop nor would she heal from her past until she was allowed to tell her story in her own way and tell it now. She was on a mission.

So we called a truce and she allowed me the author to support her cause through being there for her friends along the way. Manerva told me she saw herself in each of her friends but they didn’t know it yet. She wanted to tell the story in a way that readers saw how her love for humanity and growth had risen about racism and she could exist in a multi- culture environment. She also told me her story had to be told in a way where the three things she treasured the most that she had seen with her own eyes be denied of others during her time and even before her simply because of race, gender and status quo had to be there. They were love for God, love for family and love for freedom. She wanted to tell her story and show how it could be an inspiration for generations to come not just for blacks but for all people, that rising above any stigmatism, hope and justice can prevail in the face of adversities. When I knew that, I gained the utmost respect for this powerful and ambitious woman and as the author I then stepped completely back and took a front row seat. I invite readers as well to do the same thing and just hear over fifty years of history methodically interwoven and told by a fictional heroine named Manerva R. Jones. She will fight this dark, ugly and mean injustice in such a loving way by standing firm in doing what is right. I invite and challenge you to meet her, and read her story, Feelings.

    Author's Comments
One of the most fascinating aspects for me was to develop a powerful dimensional storyline in which spiritual truths were interwoven and interacted into the everyday lives and conversation of each of my characters. Even though my heroin is clearly Manerva R. Jones, I wanted to portray a message of social injustice and how it existed back in 1977 when civil rights especially in the south was at a high for blacks and that there are many heroes that support Manerva. I also wanted the story to focus in a multi- cultural environment that was on a higher professional status quo level that is normally portrayed in the media. Then my readers could have a balance in their rationalization that injustice does exist on all levels no matter what your position in life is or the color of your skin. Further demonstrating that if your mind can get beyond any stigmatism justice will prevail if you don’t waiver in your beliefs and love toward one another and God even in the face of great adversity.
My greatest inspiration was to be able to bring to life a fictional story I wrote ten years ago echoing the family values that were so strongly instilled within my own family. My greatest dream was to be able to dedicate it to the recent loss of both of my parents. A story that could be used as a role model for young and old of every culture and nationality. I’m especially pleased that my publisher's cover designer brought my story to life by creating a perfect cover that tells a very serious story in such a warm and almost cartoon characteristic dimensional mannerism.

    Author's Comments
In their retirement years most folks are content to spend their days pottering around in the garden or to fall asleep reading a good story. But not Leslie J. Weddell for he prefers to write a good yarn. The idea for a thriller came from his love of the Orient, where he spent twelve years of his youth in Singapore. Mesmerised by the vibrant city and the friendliness of Singaporeans, their food, and the tropical lushness of the island it was to remain in his memory until he began writing in retirement.
An ardent fan of Ian Fleming's creation, James Bond, he was inspired to create his own hero for a plot situated in the Orient. Leslie explains: "When I lived in Singapore my next door neighbour (who was a taxi driver) was a lovely man, but also an opium addict and his exasperated wife often referred to his habit as "Sleeping with Dragons." With the addition of the letter 's I had a ready made title for my first novel to fit the plot perfectly.
My favorite character in the story has got to be Richard McDonald, a canny Scot with a wry sense of humour!

    Margot Pepper
    Non-fiction, Paperback
    • Nominated for 2006 American Book Award
    Synopsis
Margot Pepper's memoir propels us through the blockade to post-cold war Cuba. Not only does the post-Soviet "Special Period" consist of 16-hour blackouts and universal food shortages, the year heralds the death of Che's virtually classless Cuban socialism. It's a surreal world where high-ranking officials are required to pick up hitch-hikers. Root canals, cosmetic surgery and graduate school are free, but toilet paper is exorbitant. There's no income tax nor homelessness, yet no house-paint either. As the story unfolds, Margot pursues a passionate love affair with a penniless Mexican poet who shakes up her views about Cuba. With cinematic vividness, Through the Wall reveals the failures and successes of one of the functioning alternatives to a corporate-run government, and draws out lessons that will be embraced by all who believe another world is possible. ~Freedom Voices

    Author's Comments
One of the most important themes in Through the Wall is that the way one perceives Cuba depends on whether one looks at it through a First or Third World lens. This contradiction is embodied in a love story between the narrator, from the first world, who grows disillusioned with Cuba and her lover Guillermo, who shows her how to see Cuba through Third World eyes. The narrator's disillusionment in the first part of the book immediately lured one of the top five agents in the nation. But upon scrutinizing the rest of the book more closely, she decided she wanted me to eliminate Guillermo and his third world perspective on the island. When I refused, she dropped the memoir claiming that people would not be interested in Cuba. My publisher, Freedom Voices, argues that standing room only at most of the venues along my California Tour, including turnouts of 70-80 people at City Lights, Modern Times, Black Oak, Duttons Brentwood, universities and so forth send a clear message that disinterest in Cuba is not the problem. The exception was Borders, which lost 35 of my books the day of the reading and posted none of the flyers they had requested from the publisher. When I asked why my book wasn't displayed for the reading, a manager explained that the tables I was pointing to were reserved for "big money."

    Synopsis
The Garden of Eden isn't what it used be....

Jack Lightfoot has spent most of his life in hiding on Earth, so it's not surprising that his response to being confronted by a bounty hunter from Eden is anger and resentment. But no one could have predicted his decision to intervene in the twenty year fight between his father and Morgan Heist.
So begins a voyage of self-discovery destined to uncover a secret originating with Adam & Eve, one that jeopardizes Jack's freedom, risks the life of the girl he loves and may forever alter the existence of people on two worlds.

    Author's Comments:
The Sorcerer's Key found its inspiration in two places: the Damon Knight novel, The Man In The Tree, and my own musings about the nature of The Garden of Eden.
My favorite character in the novel was one of the bit players, Jake Clairny. He was a guy I could enjoy spending time with.
The thing I liked most about writing the book was creating a type of magic that /could/ be real. The story derived from a couple of simple "What if this had happened?" type questions. Sylvia Cochrane of Roundtable Reviews said it best...
"Clayton Bye's work of fiction creates a fascinating set of "what if" scenarios. What if God had tried to start over? What if the devil is still around and lending active support? What if magic and sorcery were God's gifts to mankind? What if they weren't?
THE SORCERER'S KEY is a fast-paced read that combines action, adventure, and even romance with the elements of spirituality, religion, and magic. Without taking the quick way out by route of an omnipotent deity and an equally formidable adversary, Clayton Bye avoids the easy answers to the age old question of good versus evil, and instead offers the reader a third version, what if God made mistakes? What if the devil is not as powerful as we would have him be?
    An interesting read!"
