Coming Out of the Closet and Breaking the Chains

Coming Out of the Closet and Breaking the Chains: Poetic Views from the Other Side of a Special Education Classroom is a collection of poems touching on everything that has touched Ms. Dressers’ life, from her experiences and impressions as a young person having to go through the special education system in our country’s school system, to child and spousal abuse. It touches on a wide range of subjects in life. But at the heart of this huge collection of poetry is a series of poems that bear the title of the book, “The Closet.” It is here that she gives voice to not only her struggles in school, but to the thousands of young people in school today who struggle in a school system that can’t adequately meet their special needs, but also sometimes denies them of basic human rights.

Within These Pages is a kaleidoscope of ideas,
information, insights and experiences that are at
once personal, political and informative. The
author takes you on a four-year journey through
her thoughts, ideology and experiences, and
writes sometimes as if she is speaking directly
to you as you read. She uses her experiences and
thoughts as an advocate for people with learning
disabilities and as a person who has lived with
her own disabilities to illustrate the failings
of various systems and delves into ways you can
get around them and help yourself. Included
within these pages are three never-before-published poems on homelessness.
