Odysseus to Athena - Sonnets From The Greek

Odysseus to Athena: Sonnets from the Greek uses the special relationship between Odysseus and Athena in Homer’s The Odyssey as a metaphor for the special relationship between myself and my wife Sophia. In the epic, Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and later of Athens itself, is the Protectress and Inspirer of Odysseus, the cunning Greek warrior strategist from Ithaka. The prologue poem refers mainly to events outside the period of The Odyssey. The sonnets are based on specific events and adventures of Odysseus. They begin with “THE COUNCIL OF THE GODS” which opens Homer’s poem, move through Odysseus’ adventures on his journey home after the end of the Trojan War and his difficulties facing the Suitors after his arrival, and conclude with Odysseus’ “VICTORY” over the Suitors and the “PEACE FROM THE GODS.” The epilogue poem refers ironically to the prophecy that Odysseus will die “a peaceful death from the sea.”
