 Firefly  9/26/97 By Roger Barnes

We see them everywhere we go

We hit them with our car

And I bet when you were a kid

You put them in a jar

Although we can never know

We can only trust

That you let them out that night

Before they bit the dust

Even though I see them

I really do not know

How without bulb or battery

They put off a glow

They fly around the whole night long

Though they're not very large

They always have a light on

But never need a charge

What if we should ever lose

This precious little gem

It’s happening to other bugs

It could happen to him

Now you've got grandchildren

It just might tax your mind

To explain to them about a bug

With a light on its behind

The Dog   9/24/97 By Roger Barnes

Mister does your dog bite

I ask outside the gate

One more delivery and then I'm done

I can hardly wait

No sir ree wouldn't harm a flea

Was the answer that came back

With confidence I stroll right in

Not ready for the attack

With lightning speed I saw a flash

From the corner of my eye

And in my mind I surely thought

That I was going to die

He tore into my arms and legs

Like a chain saw on a log

But you told me your dog don't bite

He don't—That's not my dog

Just Missing  9-17-01  By Roger Barnes

The day started out with a cloudless blue sky

Like so many days have before

There was no way to know what lies just ahead

And the things we will all have in store

We all know where we were and what we were doing

When we got the sad news of that hour

That a plane had just crashed and the worse news of all

Was that it had just hit the twin tower

We all stood and watched as the fire billowed out

And the air would suddenly turn black

Then the next plane came in and there was no doubt

This had to be an attack

As we all tried to think who could do this thing

To show such a gross lack of pity

In so short a time with a murderous act

Just rip out the heart of a city

Yet more is to come as if this is not enough

A plan of horrific sensation

Another two planes with hi-jackers on board

Will shoot for the heart of the nation

To all those fathers, mothers, daughters and sons

Wives and husbands so many miss kissing

They remain in their heart and they won't let them die

To them they will remain as just missing
