In colorful, descriptive imagery, Ms. Mudembei takes the reader on a different kind of African safari: a close up encounter with African women whose lives are shaped by age-old societal, economic, and cultural repression. Men Don't Cry gives the reader an inside glimpse through the eyes of one who has grown up among women who cry and men who don't |

MEN DON'T CRY Herman X FLORIDA (12/10/2004)

After reading Juliet Mudembei's facinating book -MEN DON'T CRY, you will see why there is a very low divorce rate in Africa. Her portrayal of African cutural traditions and analysis of gender roles in an African society through the eyes of Musali is phenominal. She writes in the context of family, tribal leaning, and traditional rule. As I gleaned through MEN DON'T CRY, I could see why leaders turn to founding fathers for guidance on difficult decisions, even here in the west. She is vivid in her discriptions, and by the time you find out the reason 'why men don't cry,' you will be nodding your head in agreement with Juliet, as she discribes the consequences of abandoning tradition dispite the influences of education on culture. Her narative style is captivating and compelling to read. Herman X http://www.webspawner.com/users/BOOKSthings Author of: "FROM AFRICA WITH LOVE" & "QUOTABLE QUOTES" |

An elegant story about discrimination against women set in Africa. It follows the lives of a woman, Musali, and her fellow villagers. Highly intruiging and fascinating, a great read. |
