"I'll tell you what I'll do. I don't have the time at the moment to review a book, but I've read your poems. I've told you before I think you have talent. You buck the rules, but you're good at what you do.

Here's a review for you:

Black Petal Rose
By John Thompson
Review by Colleen Smith author of Entangled Within The Nature of things

This collection of poetry is very thought provoking and brings to light
the solitude and isolations of the human spirit. I found myself re-reading
some of the poetry and collecting new perspective each time.
Lingering shadows become a war.

At times reading I felt uncomfortable but as I continued reading I
began to see endurance triumph in these writings.
John Thompson's writings are defiantly an art worth checking out.

Poetry

 ( four and a half stars )

Weaving a magnificent web of words, John Thompson turns everyday language into an adventure for the mind and spirit. black petal rose is an exquisite compilation of modern day poetry that will pleasantly catch you off-guard with the turn of each page. None of Mr. Thompson’s poems are overwhelming or cliché but new and refreshing. His wording allows you to read with ease and anticipate the next piece.

Each poem forces you to feel what the writer felt when his pen raced across the paper. You feel his heartache and despair. You feel his soul through the beat of his writing.

Braving the criticism one might get from laying your feelings so freely for the world to see, John Thompson has conjured up a winning debut collection of poems. The only flaw a reader can find in this anthology is a desire the writer finds for unnecessary punctuation which can, from time to time, clutter up the page. However, the content of the words themselves makes it very easy to overlook. Bravo!

Review of:Black Pedal Rose
Author: John Thompson

This collection of poems nips at you; it’s waiting. It’s tempting. In a contemporary style, Mr. Thompson writes with power and in my view, we have a man’s art represented here. His work is artistic and visual. His use of imagery is creative enough and while a reader begins to see a picture of despair and of that damn reality that creeps into one’s day.

I can see a man, perhaps heavily tattooed, wearing sunglasses in the dimly lit space while standing in a smoke filled coffee house reciting Mr. Thompson. Some of the delivery is done in a deep, almost threatening voice. His stare is straight. His heart has a dark side.

The author knows some language and uses selected words with skill to associate the seemingly unrelated to something he feels, something he sees. There are references to his yesterdays of which there are but a few, but a few of profound experience. He looks at a scenic world and can be colorful and glad, reflective yet masculine. Some of the work reminds me of Goth perhaps and some of it was brutal and modern all done with brevity. Because I might have wanted more as an individual doesn’t mean there is a lack of art of course. In my view, for many readers, Mr. Thompson’s work will be good to take in then keep in a collection—particularly those who desire to enjoy a wide-ranging collection of styles and messages.

There are some interesting word combinations. There’s not very much joy but there is a lot of something—maybe anger, frustration—a kind of hardness comes to mind. Some of the work is fatalistic and shadows despondency to the point of suicidal thoughts. In the end he wins though and decides to have the courage to face life—and that damn reality.

The book, “black petal rose” , is the first collection of Misterpoet, John Thompson, is so nice, you can find a young poet’s world in this book. And it is so proud of to see that he dedicates to Poetry Connection and Art Plop sites, I am sure it will be a wonderful inspiration (and fever too) for all other young poets. Because really these poetry sites are great, and I am so glad to see poems in a book, congratulations and Good luck for all your life Misterpoet.

I loved the ryhmes and the voice in his poetry. Imaginaries and feelings fascinate in so many lines. Sometimes make you to think, sometimes make you smile, but the power of love always captures, and you can (also) read (behind of these lines) young poet’s heart, “black petal rose” has emotional poems, life and feelings are standing in power of poetry, there are a lot of lines that I loved so much, but want to share these lines,

The cocoon
is life

and we are the butterfly
ready to fly away
to someplace else.

Yes, you began to fly in your readers’ world, you’re welcome to this world,
All My Best Wishes,
With my love,

“Black Petal Rose” is a collection of poetry written by John Thompson. It is truly wonderful to read poetry in a man’s point of view in the modern world. He is certainly his own poet, with his own unique style that captures your attention, causing you to reflect on your life. His words describe more than just the world around him but also sheds some light on loneliness and solitude that is universally felt.

I would recommend this book and consider the poetry worth reading again. I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost with the words he brilliantly painted on the page. An excellent poetry collection to be cherished, shared, and loved for many years to come. Keep them coming Misterpoet!

John Thompson’s, ‘black petal rose,’ was very interesting. This is what I call real poetry; it was not killed with proper grammar and punctuation. As I read each and every poem, I thought about the works of Edgar Allen Poe my all time favorite poet. To me Mr. Thompson has the same artistic mind as Poe, I like it. His words and the way they were written came across very powerful. There were a few that I was like what and had to read a few times over, but they just went so far over my head I could not grasp what they were saying.

My favorite poem was “The Entrance” because it really spoke to me and I could feel where Mr. Thompson was coming from. There are several others that I really liked as well, but that one just stood out more in my mind.

I think that if you like raw poetry than you will really enjoy this collection of poetry and if you get to one you don’t like keep reading because there will be more that you love.

5 STAR WORK!!!

In his powerful and haunting work, “Black Petal Rose”, John Thompson takes us on a journey of intellectual and emotional exploration. Mr. Thompson writes a compelling collection of beauty simply stated, and deeply felt in the soul. Mr. Thompson breaks new ground and shatters taboos as we are taken into dreadful places where reality succumbs to his secret world. From the first poem, you can tell that this young man draws his poems from a great depth inside of him. Whether it’s tragic, forbidden, beauty or love, you can be sure it will be found within the pages of this distinctive collection, “Black Petal Rose”. Following a mixture of style from Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and Jim Morrison, Mr. Thompson carves out his own unique niche among the great classics. A deep sense of sadness crept upon me after realizing I was through with the last page. I very much look forward to reading many more works by this very talented artist. Even after completion, “Black Petal Rose”, continues to stir the embers of my soul. I not only recommend, I urge you to quench your thirst for art and beauty, and get your own copy of this magnificent work today.

I recently had the honor of reviewing "Black Petal Rose", by author John Thompson. While we all face demons throughout our lives,  Mr. Thompson use of words to bring those demons to light is wonderful! It is a blank canvas and he paints a very vivid picture of how one feels like a pariah in society these days. This reviewer herself has felt the sting of purdah and forlornness at times. It was hard to choose my favorite pieces of the many in the wonderful collection. To narrow it down, I must recommend "The Cry", "Lost", "Skip Me" (this reviewer's favorite), and "One breath, Two lovers before". This young man has done a tremendous job allowing others to see inside his very soul-not only the darkness that once haunted him, but the triumphs he has made. I highly recommend this book!

black petal rose is a bit of a mixed bag of poems. However, the majority of pieces (especially my favourites) follow the general theme of triumph over despair, being delivered from darkness, or being afraid to fall again. I found these works exuded a great deal of raw emotion that jumped off the page and into my being. I could feel the heartbreak, the fear, and the gloom resonate with something deep inside me. This effect was made all the more profound in the pieces that then brought the reader out of this bleak place and into a place of hope and triumph.

My favorites are "yellow taxi cab" and "cramping my hand."  I love the transfiguration for the ordinary ride into your imagination!  And the analogy to writer's block was really innovative!

A review of John Thompson's black petal rose 'the first collection of misterpoet' given by Collen Avelli, July 21, 2006.

Thompson takes his readers on an exhilarating ride as they are immersed into his thoughts and imagination. Offering a wide range of themes and styles, black petal rose encompasses descriptive imagery, menacing images of death and unique tales of the imagination.  With a flair of e.e. cummings, Thompson creates an atmosphere of unconventional design and form.  Black petal deals repeatedly deals with themes of self-doubt and the 'voices of negativity,' yet with a resounding BANG tells it's reader, that quitting is  not an option and that perserverence is Thompson's motto.  He and his works are a force to be reckoned with now and in times to come.  Thompson's poetry hits at your gut and leaves an impressionable mark!
