WOOFFER: Stories You Can Read To Your Dog (And Other Children) Betty Fasig |
|
This book is a compilation of thirty-three short adventure stories about a dog named Wooffer, the animals who share his world and how they all become friends of the truest kind. Although he is only a little dog, his brave heart and gentle spirit changes the lives of each of the animals in small ways that make a big difference to them all. Every animal, from the matriarch of the field mice, Old Agnes, Mother of Thousands, to Cho Lee Yen, the proud peacock, has had a better life because Wooffer is their good friend. These are their stories.

Dave & Lillian Brummet
About the Authors
Between the two of them, Dave and Lillian Brummet are authors, poets, photographers and book reviewers - our work has appeared in a variety of publications around the globe. Lillian's poetry book, Towards Understanding - a collection of 120 poems, was released in 2005. The first 5 years of our Column, Trash Talk, was developed into a book by the same name and released in 2004. The couple was honored with an award for "outstanding use of various media in ongoing outreach work to reduce waste in our environment" by the Recycling Council of British Columbia in 2005. In 2006, they were also awarded a certificate of Appreciation for volunteer contributions to Seeds of Diversity.
About Their Website
The Brummet's website (http://www.sunshinecable.com/~drumit) has a growing page of nearly 70 links to waste and resource organizations where the reader will learn more about better waste management and networking between groups can be done. The link page provides something for nearly everyone including teachers, parents, caregivers, frugal individuals and environmental groups. The website offers a free service called "Tip-of-the-Month" where visitors can learn and share reduction and reuse ideas. The Writing Page and the About Us page will lead to many more articles, press releases, interviews, interesting book reviews and other information that both readers and the media would find useful.
About Trash Talk
ISBN#1-4137-2518-X
People are constantly bombarded with negative information about the environment and our resources. Feeling powerless because we cannot afford to donate cash or time to a cause, we begin to feel overwhelmed by the immense environmental problems our world faces. In Trash Talk, we focus on changing people's mindset to a more open, hopeful and proactive one. Not by finger-pointing at corporations and governments, but by starting in our own homes, at our own desks.
Trash Talk began as a series of articles that focused on ways the average person can make small changes to do their part for the Earth. We compiled all the articles and other information that we could not fit in the limited space of our bi-weekly column into this book. Trash Talk embarks on frugal and conscious living techniques for the individual. We focus on the reuse of "waste" materials and reducing the consumption of resources. Trash talk is written to empower people to feel more positive about their worth as individuals in a hectic, expensive, environmentally stressed world. We show how to make a real and visible difference, while saving money at the same time.
Trash Talk could be an excellent resource in the classroom for recycling, environmental and gardening programs. Educators/caregivers can use the book to teach gardening skills (seed saving, composting, tree planting) and Vermiculture (worm composting) - the students can build their own worm bin and learn from the "worm farm". (Did you know that compost worms (red wigglers) can produce 2,000-9,000 babies annually?) Craft websites are listed for artistic projects using "waste" items. The book could be used as a tool for probing young minds to come up with original reuse ideas or environmental activities that the group can participate in. 140 resources listed at the back of the book will lead educators and individuals to new information and ideas. Trash Talk is at the Grade 10 level of reading, however, in the hands of a teacher the concepts and projects can easily be implemented as early as Grade 4.
Trash Talk has been globally received and locally embraced. Eagle bulletin (South Africa), Conservation and Recycling Journal (Netherlands), Scrap Magazine (UK), Natural Life Magazine (Canada) and Alternatives Magazine (USA) - are some examples of this global support.
About Towards Understanding
ISBN#1-4137-9337-1
This book of 120 non-fiction poems is written in chronological order. It is a story of survival, of breaking the chains of inner demons, finding value and purpose in life and growing towards understanding - but not quite reaching it. The poems also embrace the environment and question society. Towards Understanding will reach today's female audience because it is a true story of a young woman growing through childhood trauma, being independent at age 13, moving through healing and finding self worth.
Follow the author as she battles her past demons, raises her voice in anger, discovers self-awareness and recovers from and intense relationship bordering on obsession. You will witness the healing, as she becomes aware of the value of her life and falls deeply in love with a wholesome man. Finally, able to see beyond herself she starts to question society and endeavors to understand others. She discovers a love for nature and a dedication to the health of the Earth.
As is evident, the author has fun experimenting with different writing styles and altering rhythms with words. Lillian Brummet's award winning poetry has appeared in five hardcover anthology books and several publications throughout North america. She has had the honor of attaining "Editor's Choice Award for outstanding Achievement in Poetry", not once - but twice.
Lillian has recently co-authored an environmental book, Trash Talk with her husband, Dave. Their articles continue to appear in publications across the North America. Currently, this industrious pair are co-authoring their third book. Lillian also finds time in her busy schedule to write book reviews professionally.

A. Kate Ables was born the first of four alphabetically-named children. Though she did not attend college, she has redeemed herself in the eyes of her family (and regained her position as "Second-Favorite Child") through her first published novel, D.O.A. When not writing, A. Kate Ables moonlights as a rather convincing legal secretary. She too has been accused of being over-analytical and cynical.
D.O.A. is a fictional novel written primarily for girls in their early teens. Fast-paced with great amounts of attention spent on character development and dialogue (as opposed to paragraph upon paragraph describing the scenery), D.O.A. is as entertaining as it is plausible.
D.O.A. is the story of Emsley, a sarcastic and witty teen who moves to Sheridan--a town notorious for being unwelcoming to newcomers. After stumbling upon a brief article about the death of local teen, Ricky Sullivan, Emsley is intrigued by the townspeople's need to cover up the circumstances surrounding the death.
If it was a simple drunk-driving accident, why would Sergeant Michaels refuse to release the police report, even after the case was closed? Why would someone leave a note warning Emsley to stop prying--and threaten that she might be next? Why would Sheridian local, Kara, be forbidden to talk about it?
Too many questions surround the accident, and quickly, Emsley finds herself deep in the seemingly unsolvable mystery.
Willing to forfeit but unable to call off the game, Emsley faces the ultimate question: who's out for her?

What is "Storybook" about...?
"Tell our story," he said, "Tell it to anyone who will listen. Tell it with smiles... not with tears." Two people drawn together by fate. "I promise." Death By Design
A life, short, poignant, and haunted
Ended by cold piercing steel dagger
Thrust to mangle life’s pulse and
Leaving behind a disorder of demons
Laying nameless in shrouded forms-
Never to walk the shadows again.
Escaping route, still in obscurity-
Clutching at nothing to find the way
Instead a silence choking lungs- Now
Loneliness befriends the darkness
And murmuring lowly body and
Soul devoured the silence.
Never again will loneliness dwell
In this empty darkened cavern.
Forever came this day.
The Creation
1. Faceless and void the darkness of the deep
Hovered without existence and laid helpless.
The spirit speaks; I am the vessel who sees all things
Even those things of death brought to life.
Darkness shall not exist with light
Therefore, it shall become so that
A firmament keeps the separate pose
A division of light and the darkness
Therefore, still the waters bled covering all
Shall I gather and keep it resting calm and
Separate for I am who speaks to the dust
And it shall dwell as earth.
Earth’s breast, seed from itself shall give
All in itself a life of vegetation and thirst
About for life. The mist will rise and give life.
Search thee not for root unfounded.
I give thee the brightest
Courage in the sun and galaxy to light the way
And for a calm, I give thee a moon that
Shall hover all who searches for their way.
Arise now, all life in great lots coming
From the sea’s belly, such the great whale
And high in the heavens shall hold
Aloft the fowl given life.
Bestowed on what is done the
Goodness shone its brilliance
The spirit speaks; Gain in likeness
And yield one after the other with blessings.
The seas filled in profusion and the
Winged creatures soared the heavens.
Arisen from the earth , born of the like
Large animals and small answered the
Spirit’s command to exist, even the smallest
Living creature that crawled on its belly.
In likeness of the spirit, man and woman
Appeared out of the spoken will and
Were given the command over all
Living things, so charged to discipline
All that moved in the seas, air, and earth.
Observe the land that bears the essence
From trees of sustenance given you
And upon the earth, the herb of life
For the fowl, beasts and life that roams.
2. Accordingly, the creation completed
By the spirit Lord God and so sanctified
Therefore the beginning, the new epoch Filled the void and all was good.
Death Stalks Me
Desperately grasping the arms of the wooden rocker, gnarled fingers and stilted legs prevents the old man from moving, except for the slight motion of the rocker as his head drops towards his lap. Sitting wide on grimacing face, his pale blue eyes glared at the chamber floor with the perception of his haunting. With cunning speed, a thick darkness shrieked the echo that stalked him. Even in mortal terror, the old man could only groan. As the night waned, he summoned the acuteness of his senses he would need to confront death’s coming. Swiftly, his head snapped back and the cold wind of death rushed through his eyes, piercing them and shattering them into thousand pieces. He panicked at the end and his thoughts grayed before they extinguished all together.

Winter Sun
Your dark green eyes were looking at me I was shy; we were both so young The sun was rising behind the clouds You hold my hand We walked in love, knowing that it was being written, Our stories, about "you and me…"
Your dark green eyes are looking at me now As yesterday, we are not young but We know what is winter sun Keeping us strong, alive And rich…
By Nia
( the next three poems are by Laura! )
A Parent's Love
How it must feel to a parent to see your son suffering To see him work so hard yet have so much dissappointment and pain
You ask him how he did on a test He replies, "Mom, I think I did good." Yet when the test results come in His hopes and dreams are crushed yet again
A mother feels the pain of her son who has yet to take the TAKS test again Once, twice He's had to take Reading and now I have found that he has to do the math over again
Here we go again People tend to say to you You have to do this and that with him Yet you try over and over to get him interested
And yet I say "How can I get him interested?" He's tried over and over and is dissappointed by failure so he says,"Why try?"
It's always a constant battle and I wonder if we'll work it out in the end I wonder wether he's going to have to repeat the grade again
Sometimes I feel it's my fault that my son doesn't succeed I feel I should be doing something else to help him believe that he can do great in school and be as successful as he can be
I try not to lose faith in everything when rocky storms come my way It's hard for me not to give up myself on such a sad, sad day....
The End of School
The end of school is near It can't end too soon The kids are getting restless The teachers feeling gloom
The last week is here Studying, semester finals Many troubles have abound ISS, suspensions Surely this will end soon
During lunch just yesterday A fire alarm was pulled By an 8th grader doing it just for kicks Didn't think about consequences or what might happen next
Now there's just 1 1/2 days Until this school year ends What will happen next, you ask? I don't know...but I'm sure someone will try something before the very end.
Keeping Faith
The world seems to be crumbling around you You don't know where to turn For every problem you fix Another takes it's place
Yet, you are supposed to be the strong one To help keep your family together You want to go crawl under a rock Somehow you don't You turn to your faith instead Because something inside of you Says, "It will be ok in the end."
The below poems are By: Frank E Gibbard
TO BELIEVE OR NOT TO BELIEVE
I believe in my God therefore I am as good As a God myself empowered to dictate word Of God to my fellow man to tell him I heard My God tell me how to live and how you should Live as I would for that is good and very holy Pure and very very good as the good God is For He is Lord - lord knows He's good for you For all the World for it is really His, wholely. I do not believe in God - am I conversely bad? I do not dictate to others how to live a life I don't push at doors ideas that ancient humans had I don't tell my fellow man he can only love a wife I have never prosletysed and think people shouldn't I imagine like John Lennon only sky above my roof No God set up to be eulogised - a fair society wouldn't Not one kid infused with dogma only taught the honest truth.
Bush Blair and the Battle for Baghdad
When I consider the master plan to invade and subdue Iraq I'm sure the architects would redesign their military attack, If given half a chance, I think they'd just love another crack At it but life isn't like that, you'only get one whack, If it were judged in business terms they all would get the sack. Your creation's precision boys equates with Jackson Pollock's To put it crudely Messrs. Bush and Blair it's just a load of bollocks The foresight you showed in how to end the game was totally lacking I'm sorry for the troops you lead whose cause I'm always backing. Political intelligence was never more needed: an oxymoron term Morons could have done no worse it makes this patriot squirm You may easily invade and win a battle but not a country's mind Or win it's people over if you stumble in half blind. Like Joshua you blew down the city walls trumpeting awesome loud But for every enemy body that falls another springs up proud, The shock predicted in part is our's not at all as you intended The deadly weapons now trained on us are not the ones pretended.
