Early in the summer of 2000 I was working at Step by Step daycare as a preschool teacher. I felt like I should be at home with my kids but, we needed the money desperately. Little Jon was only eleven and I knew he needed someone to look after him. I couldn’t afford a babysitter or a day camp. Sara was at home with him but, Little Jon, more than likely, would be outside in the woods somewhere and Sara would be inside the house all summer. Would she check on him? Could she determine if a situation was an emergency? Little Jon was allergic to insect bites and stings. What if he fell out of a tree and knocked himself unconscious or broke his neck? What if he decided to go near the river? He could swim but, what about undercurrents? It worried me. Anything could happen. Ironically, I had a job taking care of other people’s children and I couldn’t be there to take care of my own.
