Laura Wright was born Laura Beth Chambers in 1975. Laura dabbled in creative writing throughout childhood, but it wasn’t until 1988 that she realized she wanted to pursue a career in the field. Three weeks after the death of her father Laura began prolifically writing poetry. She knew, at 13, her future would be in the field. She produced new work on a daily basis and a year later was writing songs and short stories.
After the unexpected death of her grandmother eighteen months later, Laura plunged into a deep depression. She had been battling the illness since the death of her father. The descent continued throughout her teens and by 16, she was hospitalized. She fought to overcome the illness and succeeded. Laura graduated at 17 and worked for a major book printer at 18. She was a passenger in a life-changing car accident shortly thereafter. She attributes her survival to God by saying, “How else can you drive off a steep bank at 70 mph and walk away? Divine intervention.”
She began her first semester of college in 1994 and worked towards a license in real estate. However, unable to find employment while in attendance, Laura returned to full-time work after the semester.
Her struggles were not over. Laura had developed a mild panic disorder in 1992. What started as a minor concern became debilitating in 1995. The anxiety was so severe she could seldom leave her home. It was then she discovered the isolation and other effects of suffering this disorder. Laura eventually overcame the fear. With relaxation therapy and mild medication, the attacks decreased and she was able to battle them using only meditation and deep breathing. She returned to work at the end of the year.
Laura soon began working in the housekeeping department of several motel/hotels. The flexible environment and regular hours gave her adequate time to continue writing longer works. In 1996, she was producing novellas. Laura was sexually assaulted on the job in August of the year and left the establishment she was employed at. After finding that her employer was prepared to go against her in court and help a “regular,” she changed work environments completely. The co-workers who might help her knew they would lose their jobs if they did. The rest pretended nothing happened and criticized her for speaking out about it. She initiated criminal prosecution; however after realizing how far the establishment would go against her, she stopped the process.
She then began working for a warehouse, Laura met her husband. The next year brought many wonderful surprises. They married in 1997 and had a son in the same year. Her son has an autistic disorder. Laura began developing a web presence in 1999 and began operating many small, personal sites devoted to writing.
In 1998, under the dubious advice of an attorney, the couple filed a bankruptcy motion due to medical bills. The nine-month ordeal annihilated their financial standings and, even with the official reports of disciplinary action taken against the attorney for neglect and misleading advice, they were never able to repair the damage done. Laura became an advocate for victims of similar circumstances afterward.
Laura’s first novel, While I’m Dying, was published in 2001 and became phenomenally successful for an ebook. She has continued to work in writing and has held positions that range from Staff Writer to Contributing writer. Her second book, Timeslips and Terrors, was released in August of 2005. She has three more novel-length works waiting for publication, as well as many in the first draft.
Laura continues to struggle with an occasional anxiety attack, however still practices the same deep breathing and meditation. When she finds the time, she enjoys practicing yoga and traditional belly dancing. She is a strong advocate for parents of autistic children and for those suffering the same psychological issues she had. She is currently working on a line of children’s’ books for autistic children and a major area of the domain www.laurawrites.net, for parents, friends, and family of those who are autistic. She is also an advocate for therapeutic writing. She has returned to college and is pursuing both two- and four-year degrees.
Laura was blessed with the gift of writing at an early age. The creativity brought her through many ordeals and continues to be one of the greatest joys in her life. The struggles and triumphs have helped her create a diverse mix of characters and elements. Many of her experiences eventually find their way into her work and she makes no apologies for this practice. She simply states, “The only way to write about life is to experience it.”
