Laura Porras, author of "Alias, the Rose" is currently writing a new novel on the struggles of the families in Washington State to gain custody of their related foster children placed in State care and often adopted out to non-related foster parents, the families believe for the huge Federal bonuses awarded the State. There is no monetary benefit for the State in Kinship Care.
What began with one relative placing a single classified ad seeking other relatives being denied custody has become a Nation wide campaign for reform. The classified ads are now being funded by the Foundation for Children's Rights and will be paid for to any relative wanting to place an ad but finding the cost prohibitive. This is for any person in any State in the nation. The initial response from Michigan after placing a single ad was "We're Mach5 with our hair on fire!"...the ads are a huge success in locating others within a department and these contacts group together to compare notes.
They are finding "Patterns of obstruction", falsified documents presented to the Judges hearing the child placement cases, denial of family contact with the children and other malfeasance within DCFS.
The relatives have carpooled at 3 o'clock in the morning from Richland to Olympia to testify before Congress, and as a result the case files are now being opened and reviewed. The classified ad
format and an aggressive campaign to hold DCFS accountable is now being copied Nation wide, and reform will be lobbied this year, simultanously as a Nation.
The book is about the valiant efforts of middle aged relatives fighting relentlessly to bring their relatives out of foster care and back to the biological homes, and how reform has begun in Washington State and the Nation as a result.
Please contact Laura Porras for more information, and please report this to the State of Washington as it is being watched Nation wide in hopes that the Department of Children and Family Services (CPS) will no longer have unchecked power and immunity, and will be brought into accountability in the placement of children taken into State care.
I placed that ad 3 months ago in the TriCity Herald.
