Was writing and reading a part of your childhood?
Very much so. I was raised like an only child since my youngest sibling is sixteen years older than I. So, I entertained myself with reading. I have a whole collection of Nancy Drew mysteries to prove it! And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I can remember writing notes, letters, stories, and poems to my mother when I was very young. Then in high school I joined the Writer's Club. I never stopped writing for pleasure. After I learned to play the guitar I began writing song lyrics. Writing has been an enjoyable hobby, almost therapeutic for me! And now, to be recognized for one of my creative endeavors is just icing on the cake!
When do you write?
About any time I get the chance! Teaching takes up a lot of my time and energy during the school year. So I take full advantage of the summer breaks!
What inspires your writing?
The need or drive to be creative comes first. The ideas for a story just seem to pop into my head, then the characters develop—probably a collage of traits from people I've known. I'm not sure—and well, the pictures and ideas in my mind just start pouring out onto the paper, layer upon layer.
Why is your novel titled Oklahoma's Gold?
First of all, gold does not refer to actual gold. It is, rather, a symbol for what one finds most valuable in life. And that, of course, is different things to different people. You find out what those things are when you read the book.
Did you do any research in writing this book?
Definitely. I have an insatiable appetite for any facts about Native American tribes and their cultures. I found tons of information on both Native Americans and Oklahoma from books and the internet.
What makes Oklahoma's Gold unique?
I'd have to say the added touch of the several interludes throughout the story. They are reflections of Native American customs and folklore that are meant to add a little cultural spice to the flavor of this novel.
Will you bring these characters from Oklahoma's Gold back in another novel, perhaps making it into a series?
I'm not sure. I guess if enough readers showed interest in reading about them again, I'd consider it.
What are you currently working on?
A novel which takes place in the late 1950's in the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania near the Kinsua Dam and the Allegheny Mountains. My family has a cabin there and as I was growing up I can recall the controversial situation between the Seneca Indians and the government about building the dam. I wanted to draw on that and my childhood memories of visiting the cabin to create a story. I hope to have it done by the end of this year.
When and where will the book be available?
