This is a touching story about an extraordinary dog and her caregiver. Valentine was way too smart for the average canine. Everyone who knew her would say the same thing.

She came to me on a warm August morning. Her name was Valentine. She was a sweetheart engagement gift. Her caregiver brought her to my little ranch in Colorado, he said they could not keep her because she was too rambunctious and over active. All I saw was a beautiful 8 eight month old chocolate Labrador/mix puppy.

I already had two dogs and a cat. Merlin, my Keeshound, and Poochie, my Border Collie mix and Maxwell the cat. Not to mention my two horses, Commander and Praire Deer. When I was told Valentine was going to the dog pound, I agreed to see if she would blend in with my menagerie of animals.

When she entered the house the other two dogs came over to her and checked her out. Merlin just sniffed and went back to his chair. Poochie, however, being the other female growled a little and then returned to her place on the rug. Now Maxwell was another story. He was okay with Merlin since he came to live with me when I already had Merlin. He was supposed to be a companion that Merlin could dominate, but he quickly assessed that Merlin could be dominated by him. He also was okay with Poochie since she did not mind sharing a home with a cat. But Valentine was another story. Val's curiosity about the was immediate and Maxwell took off for the bedroom followed closely by Val. He scooted under the bed and stayed there. Valentine's caregiver started to leave and Val looked at him and sat down on my foot. She and I both knew she was now home for good.

Realizing this situation, Maxwell gave up and left home for a house at the end of the block that already had several cats. He never came back, but I would see him on the front porch lying in the sun on occasion and call to him. Maxwell would raise his head, look at me and go back to sunning himself. Valentine met the horses on her first day with me. Commander came over to the fence and lowered his head to her face. She let out a series of barks and he responded by giving her a very wet snort. She sat back on her butt and just looked up at him. Commander raised his head and started bobbing it up and down. It was sort of a gesture of approval of the new addition to our menagerie.
