 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My thanks to Publish America! There are many great stories out there, many great authors who will never be seen in print because they are immersed in a system that will not allow anyone without a certain set of qualifiers to have a book published. They are lost in a world of query letters, agents who won’t return phone calls, and publishers who turn down everyone who doesn’t fit inside their small boxes. Publish America is changing that!

Many of these so called legitimate publishers say that a book that is published outside their established guidelines has no credibility and isn’t worthy of being published. I say that many of these books are not only worthy, they are well thought out, well plotted, and well written, and I salute Publish America for filling a void that so many of these other publishers simply will not address.

Great books are written by people who have a great story to tell, and not only by authors who have all the right connections and all the right tools. It is a fact that a truly great story doesn’t care who tells it, it cares only that it touches the heart and soul of those who read it.

In the history of bad guys, The Harpe Brothers should be chapter one! What an incredible ( and true) story. Don's approach in this book is unusual in the sense that not only does he recount the story of these two infamous Kentucky murderers, he also puts a human sensitivity into the story. No one is born to be a mass murderer, and the line of fact presented gives one an insight into the reasoning of the two Harpe Brothers. It is written in a fashion that one could describe as the story around the campfire, and those are always the best stories. I highly recommend this book to all of my history fanatic friends, as is the case in most important works, fact is much more delightful ( in a macabre sense ) than fiction.                                                                                                                               C.C. An amazing story told as only E. D. Harpe could tell it. After hearing of the
murderous Harpe Brothers, I wondered what everyone else would wonder...what made them do it? Writer E. D. Harpe, from years of research, gives us the answer. The book, even after knowing the story, kept me turning pages. Mr. Harpe has taken a dark piece of American history and melded it into a masterpiece of story telling. From their fathers death at the hands of vigilante night riders to their grisly end by a posse, the book covers the short, yet startling lives of Micajah and Wiley Harpe. I enjoyed every page.

 DEDICATION

born wolf .. DIE WOLF The Last Rampage of the Terrible Harpes is a labor of some 20 years of my life. Having been born a Harpe, and knowing the story of Micajah and Wiley since I was a child, I spent years researching the story of the Harpe brothers, and more years searching for exactly the right context in which to write the book. I wanted to show that even those these were perhaps the two most evil killers in the history of America, still they were human, and as such they had to have had reasons for the things they did. I attempted to find those reasons, and as I did I came to realize that their story was much more that had ever been written. I began my research in the early 1980’s, and the book you hold was completed near the end of 2005.

I dedicate this book to Helen, my wife of 40 years, who encouraged me to write the book, and, more importantly, understood the times when it wasn’t going as well as I would have liked, and understood me during the many late nights when everything was perfect and I was in the zone.

To my children, Shelly Maria and her husband Randy, to Jason and Syntha and Derek, all of whom read the book and helped me to stay focused while writing it. They gave up time with me so that I could finish the book, and I couldn’t have done it without them.

It is dedicated to Delilah Reid and Ron Rentchler, who both helped just by their encouragement, and to my brother Ray Harp, who was raised the same as I was. It is especially for C.C. McCartney, who almost missed a plane because he was engrossed in reading the manuscript in the lobby of the Nashville airport. It is dedicated to my cousin Jim Walker, who read the entire manuscript in one sitting on a trans-Atlantic flight. It’s for a special lady in Arizona, Diana Powels, who bought a copy of the manuscript a few years ago, an act that gave me hope that one day it would actually be published. It is dedicated to all Harps everywhere, especially those in Macon County, Tennessee, where my father’s family spent their lives.

First last and always, it is dedicated to my dad, Birtle Odell Harp, who was a Harp before me, and to my mom, Lena Viola Harp, who gave me a love of reading and writing that has lasted all of my life.
