Review of “Romancing on the Bay of Fundy”
By Erika Staples
Author and poet of
“Piece of My Soul” and “Spirals of Nature”
“Romancing the Bay of Fundy” by Donna Sheehy is a collection of poems that take you on a journey to Nova Scotia. Her realistic words tell a story and paint vivid images of the world she has come to know and love. I taste the maple, smell the salt, hear the ocean waves, and see the landscape shape in my mind as I read each line. Donna shares with us mysterious ghost tales, along with deep desires of her heart and passions of love that all can relate to. Donna brings me to tears in her poem “Forerunners” with words such as:
Heavy hearted she waits the night
praying for a fate more bright,
but when told of his grievous doom
she understands his visit to her room.
I applaud the bravery shown through her words. When she went to Parrsboro and fell in love with it. Parrsboro gave her no choice but to then make it her new home. Not everyone can follow their heart that way. In the poem “The Ghost and His Lady” a love tale is revealed and brought to life like a magical movie, and made my heart weep for the longing of such true love.
There she slumbers in her bed
with a timid reach of his hand,
his unfelt caress upon her chin
suppressing his love’s demand.
I give this book respected acclaim. Donna’s poems are gratifying to read and I would highly recommend “Romancing on the Bay of Fundy“. The Bay of Fundy has romanced my heart through Donna’s quality of words. Her tremendous choice of words to trace life into a poetic picture is an astonishing talent which created a timeless book to eternally treasure.
