Rogers writer publishes romance ‘Forever Yours’

Thursday, March 4, 2004

ROGERS — Donna Laird used to read romance novels and think, "I could write that story." Now she’s done just that.

Her newly published book, "Forever Yours," may be only the first of many for the 43-year-old woman. She’s hard at work now on a murder mystery. "I have a serial killer running around," Laird explained with a smile. "You know, I can sit down in there and get into a whole different world. I don’t know how, but my characters find me.

" It seems they’re writing their story through me. I love writing and seeing how things turn out. "

In" Forever Yours, "Laird writes about Samantha Kane, a young woman from a small town in Arkansas who longs to be an actress. Kane lands the lead in an off-Broadway play shortly after arriving in the Big Apple. The story is filled with unexpected turns and surprises.

The author and her husband are the parents of two grown daughters and have three grandsons.

" I’ve had lots of support from my husband and all my family, "Laird said." When I received a rejection notice from one publisher, my youngest daughter, Christie, sent my manuscript to the publisher who accepted it. She did it without telling me at first. "Angie, my oldest daughter, is also a big fan of mine, and my sister, Debbie DeShields, encourages me so much. Debbie has published some books and has been a lot of help to me."

Always a big reader and having well over 1,000 books at her home, Laird said her publisher is Publish America. She has been asked to appear at the Rogers Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 261 N. 46 th St., to sign copies of "Forever Yours" and visit with bookstore customers. "I’ll be there beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27," Laird said. "My book is also available online at DonnaLaird@publishedauthors. net."

When asked what advice she might give to anyone interested in writing, Laird didn’t hesitate. "Write it," she insisted. "If you really want to write, don’t give up. Don’t ever give up on your dreams. I’m so glad I’ve written my first book and look forward to writing several more. I have to get that serial killer under control."

Local writer publishes second book

ROGERS — Surprised at times by the turn her novels take, Rogers writer Donna Laird said it’s because the characters in her stories take over. "It may sound weird," Laird said, smiling, "but when I write, I’ll have an idea of how things are going to go. Then the outcome will not be at all what I thought it was going to be. It really does feel like the characters just work out their own situations."

Laird’s second book, "Katrina’s Destiny," has just been published and has already received several impressive reviews. Fellow romance author Sherry Moore wrote, "‘ Katrina’s Destiny’ is a wonderful story full of romance and surprises. In a world where true love is so hard to find, Katrina beats incredible obstacles to find the fate she is destined to find. ‘Katrina’s Destiny’ is an inspiring story that will warm everyone’s heart."

Currently working on another book, Laird explained that her next offering is fiction, but not of the romance genre. She has also completed a mystery, yet to be published. The author clearly enjoys her craft. "I can lose myself in writing," Laird said. "It’s work, but it’s fun. When I first started writing, I wrote everything in longhand. I use a computer now, but it’s still easy to get caught up in the story. I really like to write, and I feel my skills are getting better and better. And I love to read other writers’ work."

Laird, a longtime Rogers resident, and her husband have been married almost 30 years. They are the parents of two daughters and have three grandsons. Laird’s closeness to her family is noted in her new book’s dedication. "Katrina’s Destiny" is dedicated to her husband, daughters and, particularly, to her mother who died within the last two years. Laird writes: "And to my mother. I love you, Mom. Giving you up was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life, but I know you are watching over me always. Mom, this book is for you." "Katrina’s Destiny" is due for release the last day of February. However, it can be pre-ordered online at www. publishamerica. com; www. bn. com or www.amazon.com. Laird also invites people to visit her author’s Web site at www. donnalaird. cjb. net.
