Virgil Dickson:  How to land an internship in Journalism

,Mr. Dickson will present a PowerPoint presentation which will  go through the steps of identifying certain papers in certain markets, then showing the papers that have documented evidence of having an internship program. He will discuss which papers one should apply to based on their experience. He will  talk about cover letter tips, the daily experiences of an intern and end with a Q&A.

Virgil Dickson is a senior at DuPaul University majoring in Journalism. Are you writing a book or something?" As a child this was a question I heard a lot. I had no problem getting all up in people's business. The why and how people did things genuinely perplexed me. When I realized I could make a career out of this in middle school. I knew my destiny was set. The way to make it in this business is to truly have the fire for it, and not be bogged down by geographical constrictions. Let your passion lead you. I have incorporated this reasoning in finding my internships. For my first professional journalism gig, I went to upstate New York and worked at Singer Mariah Carey's summer camp as a teacher's assistant in the journalism classes. While there I taught the kids proper interview techniques. Oh and yes I got to meet Mariah Carey. The next summer I had two internships, one as a reporter at a weekly called the Chicago Journal the other in the business offices of the Chicago Tribune. It was important for me to experience both sides of the industry. In 2006, I had two major internships. The first was in Austin, Texas, where I worked at the city's daily newspaper called the Austin American Statesman. My stories were often on the cover of the metro section and the A1 section. I covered everything from cold case murders to concert reviews. Following that I went to the Daily Herald , the third largest daily newspaper in the Chicago market. At the beginning of the year I returned to the Chicago Tribune to intern at their youth tabloid publication RedEye, and this summer I got the mother of all internships, which is working as a metro intern for the Washington Post. So what's the moral of the story? Give yourself no restrictions and dream big.

As I am writing the sequel to Children of Plains Estates,God is placing so many things in my heart. I pray that as I add Mexican, Cuban, Jewish, Jehovah witness characters that I will represent each group with pride. Sometimes I must show the stereotypes in order to force us as a people to confront our own dark sides. Continue to pray with me that this book will open the dialogue of understanding throughout the world. I write not because of the person that I am. I write only by the grace of God.

Thank you for your greetings on my website.
