About the author:

Murphy was born and raised in Rome, graduating from West Rome High School.  She currently lives in Alabama with her husband and two sons.  "I always knew, for as long as I can remember, that writing was my calling in life."
Her mother, Linda Shores, and grandmother, Eddie Mae Bagwell, live in Rome, and her father, the late Billy Edward Shores is a big inspiration for the books.

About the books:

Grace: Grace Hollingsworth is forced to go on after her father is killed by a drunk driver.  But her family and friends, even with problems of their own, help her get through it and she finds forgiveness.
Searching Hearts:
Grace heads to Florida for some time with her aunt and uncle but is caught up in the disappearance of her baby cousin.  And there's more going on back home in Georgia.

The author on her books:

"All the books revolve around Grace but you get caught up in the families and their lives.  I like the closeness of family ties, and I try to show that with my books.  You get to know those characters."

From "Searching Hearts":

"Grace looked at the clock beside her bed at her aunt and uncle's house.  She could hardly believe her eyes.  It was already 12:30.  She had not overslept like that since the first day that she was there.
Grace's thoughts went to those of the previous day.  She quickly got up from her bed and ran to Melissa's room.
'Oh no,' she thought.  'Was Melissa missing again, or had her weary mind made up her little cousin's return,' she wondered anxiously to herself."

The author's favorite author:
"I really like Janet Oke, though she's more historical.  I'm more contemporary.  But she's an inspiration."

Another book on the way?:

Murphy says she is working on a third book for the series, with the pending title "Love At A Distance."

Local author gets published

By Kristin Latty-The Post  klatty@postpaper.com August 25, 2003

Cherokee County now has its very own fictional Christian contemporary author.  April Shores Murphy has published the first book in a series, titled "Grace."

"Everyone says to write what you know, and if there is one thing I know about it's losing a dad at the age of 14 like Grace," said Murphy.

"Grace" is a story that involves mystery, romance and life.  It touches the lives of seven different families and describes their happiness and sadness in various moments of life.

"Grace and some of the other characters in my book possess a lot of my thoughts and feelings," said Murphy.  "It's a form of therapy to sit down and write her story.  Her world and all of her family and friends are a deviation from my own life."

The one thing that sets Murphy's book apart from most of today's best sellers is that it does not contain bad language and does not reveal any descriptive acts.

As Murphy says, she wanted to write books "that would bring honor to God" and books "people would welcome their children to read."

"Grace" is in stores now and "Searching Hearts," the second book in the series, is complete.  Murphy is currently working on the third book.

Murphy will have a book signing at Our Daily Bread on Sept. 6.

Murphy's book "Grace" is available locally at Our Daily Bread and The Willow Tree in Centre, Headquarters Hair Care Center in Cedar Bluff, and LiTaLa Hair Fashions in Rome, GA

Grace

Q.  April, thank you for sharing your story with me.  I felt the warmth on each page as the characters came to life.  Are any of these based on "real" people that you know?

A. Thank you!  It was my pleasure!  In answer to your question, yes and no.  The characters are all fictitious, and their experiences are all fictitious, yet I have first hand experience with losing a father and the effects that it has on your entire family.  God has allowed me to have a real sense of feeling for all my characters and just how their hearts soar and ache as they do so that hopefully those feelings come across to my readers.

Q.  Would you tell us the background for the book, how were the ideas created?

A. One day I decided to just sit down at my computer and see if what I had felt since I was a little girl about my calling being that of a writer was correct or not.  I prayed about it before doing so, then the words just started coming, and thus Grace was born.  It was also very therapeutic for me to write Grace.  My mother-in-law encouraged me by telling me that if no one else read it, maybe that would be my way of healing any feelings that remained in me after my own father’s death.

Q.  In your most darkest moments, other than the Lord, was there a particular person in your life who you know prayed for you?

A.  That would be my Mother.  My mother is also my best friend!  She is the first one I call when I am in need of prayer!  She is also the one that I send each new chapter of each book that I write to first!  She reads and edits any mistakes that I have made.  She, as well as my Grandmother, my Mother-in-law, and a few other close people in my life are the ones who hold me up when I feel in any way insecure about my writing.  In this way, I know that God has truly filled my life with “earthly angels”!

Q.  Tell us about the other books in this series.

A.  Searching Hearts is currently in the publishing process right now.  It is the second book in the series.  It takes you to Florida where Grace is spending the first month of her summer break from school.  Her young cousin is missing and they search to find her.  Meanwhile back home in Georgia you continue on in the lives of the other characters that you have met in Grace.  All of the characters search their hearts in one way or another to find out even more about each characters lives.  I am currently working on the third book in the series Love at a Distance.  It will detail just that…the characters will deal with having long distance relationships with their loved ones.

Q.  What can you tell us about April, the author?  What is a day like for you?

A.  I am a wife and mother of two boys.  My whole life and schedule revolves around them.  My days are filled with busy-ness, the boys sporting events, etc.  It is almost hard to work from home, as most people tend to take for granted that when you are home you do nothing.  But, as any writer knows, we have to have a work day as well, as if we left our house and punched a clock like the next guy.  Mornings are my favorite times of each day.  I can find the peace and solitude to write, to reread what I have written, and lately I found time to help others by doing reviews for other authors!  It has been an awesome experience seeing just what kind of quality books that PA accepts!

Q.  Who is the most influential person in your life who contributed to your writing career?

A.  I cannot pick just one.  I have been very blessed!  My Mother and Grandmother have instilled me with my love for God and my faith in Him.  My father’s love and his death have provided the inspiration behind Grace as well.

Q.  Are there any genres that you haven't yet written in, that you would like to in an upcoming project?

A.  I say my genre is Contemporary Christian fiction, yet all of the books that I write contain romance, mystery and intrigue, and well, just everyday life.  I like writing these combinations.  I have always wanted to provide inspiration, drama and a sense of escape to my readers!  The more experienced at writing I am getting, the more that I seem to be able to provide more and more cliffhangers throughout my writing and the ability to keep people turning the pages!

Q.  Tell us a bit about your family and how have they supported you in your writing?

A.  My family is great!  During the writing of Grace, I almost shut down on most everything else in order to write it.  Since then, though I have tried to maintain a balance.  I am still learning though.  My family is a great help and inspiration to me!  My youngest son is so proud that he has to tell everyone he sees just about that his mom is a writer!  It’s cute!

Q.  Any special memories with family members or close friends you would like to share?

A.  My most special memory about my childhood would have to be Christmas Eve as I was growing up.  My Dad’s birthday was on Christmas Eve, so my Mom would try to bake a cake or most often cupcakes to celebrate the first part of that day as my Dad’s birthday.  Then my Dad would take us (my older brother and I) around to his sister’s house and to his brother’s house that lived nearby and we would visit with them while my Mom stayed home.  By the time we got back home ‘Santa’ would have already come to our house and my brother and I would go in and see what ‘he’ brought for us.  That was one of the most special days of the year for me.  Not because of the presents, we would get late that night mind you, but because of the closeness to my Dad and my Dad’s family that came that day!

Q.  If there was one thing you could change or do over again, what would it be?

A.  My dad would still be here.  I doubt Grace would have come to me without his death…but I’d much rather have written other books instead of having to go through the experience of losing him.

Local author following her dream

Cherokee County Herald  Wed., Aug. 20, 2003

April Shores Murphy is following her dream of being a writer.

"I feel very blessed to be able to be the wife, mother, and full-time writer that I have always dreamed of being," said Murphy, who was born and raised in Rome, Ga--a graduate of West Rome High School.  She currently resides in Cherokee County with her husband and their two sons.

Husband Charles is an electrician. He fishes bass tournaments on Weiss Lake and surrounding lakes on the side.  Oldest son C.J. plays baseball and football for his high school.  Youngest son Eddie plays baseball for Dixie Youth.

The fruits of her labor were recently realized as Murphy's Christian contemporary publication, "Grace," hit the bookshelves.

Already, Murphy's second book in what will be a series is in the hands of her publisher and she's halfway through a third book.

On Sept. 6, Murphy will be at Our Daily Bread in the Cherokee Plaza signing copies of "Grace."  She'll also have signed copies available for purchase at Our Daily Bread, The Willow Tree and Headquarters Family Hair Center on a daily basis.

Looking back, Murphy recalled, "Everyone says, 'write what you know.' Well, if there is one thing I do know about, it is losing a dad at the age of 14, and the effects it has on your whole family.  My dad died, not by a car wreck, like Grace's dad, but from a serious heart attack right before he was to have yet another heart surgery."

She said that's when her life changed forever.

"I guess that is what makes Grace's story so important to me," Murphy said.  "Grace is not me."

However, she said, she and some of the other characters in the book possess a lot of her thoughts and feelings.

"It was a form of therapy to sit down and write my story," she said.  Her world and all of her family and friends are a deviation from her own life.

"I am a stay-at-home mom," she said.  "My husband and I decided that I would stay home to be here for the kids as they grow up, which is perfect for someone interested in having a career as a write,"

Murphy said she loved books from a young age."I loved writing poems and short stories," she said, "and I always felt a longing deep within myself to write books, not just any type of book, but books that would bring honor to God, books that people would welcome their children to read.  There are so many movies and books now in this world that are not suitable for kids, and teenagers.  Any parent knows that.  My books do not contain any bad language in them, and they do not have descriptive acts in them that are better off left behind closed doors.  You will understand in the other language I use what people think, how they feel, etc. without me getting too graphic or gory.

"I pray that the market is still interested in this kind of book.  I know that many people that I have talked to are.  I have had so many people to tell me that they cannot wait to get a hold of my books for that very reason."

Murphy said she gets into her writing.  "When I write, I come alive," she said.  "I want my readers to experience the joy that I have in writing about all the characters as they read and join in the characters lives.

"My characters are fiction, but their characters are based on today's reality.  They are not perfect by any means.  Some of the ideas that I try to get across may seem like they are trying to make Grace's world a perfect world, such as that of waiting until marriage before consummating a relationship.  I know in reality that young people are having a harder and harder time right now dealing with such issues as that.  I am really just trying to stress to our younger generations that it is all right to wait for marriage, that it is more than all right.

"Before I sit down and write anything, I go down on my knees to pray.  So therefore,I give credit to God for everything that I write.  I ask God to divinely inspire each and every sentence.  He put me here.  He blessed me with the gift of writing.  He inspires every word of every sentence that I write.  I am just a willing vessel.  I am not trying to come across as if I am perfect either.  I am not.  I don't know a single soul on this earth that is.  Nevertheless, as most people do, I do strive to be as good a person as I possibly can be."

Murphy said her first book is an introduction to all the characters.  Her second book in the "Grace" series will take readers more in-depth into the lives of her characters.

"It is filled with even more intrigue and mystery,"Murphy said.

Murphy points out that her books are geared to adults as well as teens and pre-teens.

Murphy has received three reviews thus far and is happy to report that they have been positive.
