Excerpt from Modeled After Trouble...

It was uncommon for Norfolk International Airport to have its distant sounds of screeching tires of planes landing drowned out by the loud Latin flavor of Ricky Martin’s "La Vida Loca". Even as the powerful engine of the Ferrari idled, he could hear the upbeat tempo of the music take control of its environment. He had parked a few feet from a rented Leer Jet, which served as the backdrop for the Glamour Girls’ photo session. He looked at the model standing by the private jet, recognizing her as the one who sprayed him with the squirt gun the day before. He remembered her name to be Alexis.

Her smile was playful as she teased the camera and the small crowd of off-duty airport personnel. He ceased the engine, watching her spin around in her red two-piece evening gown. Its halter top exposed her toned abdomen and the strings in the back keeping the material together, left her back naked. He smiled as she lifted her long hair to expose her shoulders. He could see the photographer fighting to get as many pictures as he could from each angle.

Standing beside the photographer and the mostly male populated crowd of bystanders, was Courtney looking on with eyes of a director. He could tell she was searching her mind for the best pose. Her decisions would no doubt be a factor in determining if she would succeed Olivia Lockehart.

He stepped out of the Ferrari and started towards the photo shoot. He was still asking himself questions as to how someone could break into his home without the alarm going off. He was also bothered by the fact that someone knew their target well enough to address them by name. It could only lead to someone within Glamour Girls, but who could that be? And how could they learn the access code to the beach house. He hoped Reggie’s search would have something that he could use to make sense of all the loose ends.

He was within a couple of steps of Courtney and the photographer when he saw a small dark image against the fiberglass hull of the Leer Jet. He concentrated on the image until he made out a figure. It was holding what looked like to be a rifle. He quickly yelled "Get down!" as he sprinted towards the model, but his warning was drowned out by the photo shoot’s loud music.

He grunted when he pushed one of the few spectators out of his way. His duty to protect Alexis, as well as the other models at the photo shoot, was never more critical than this moment. He leapt onto the small platform and dove towards Alexis. He tackled her onto the ground just as a loud shot echoed over the music. He could hear the shot ricochet harmlessly off the hull of the Leer jet. It almost blended in with the sound of those in attendance as they screamed and dove to the ground realizing the gravity of the situation.

Alexis's coughing confirmed that she was no worse for wear than getting the wind knocked out of her. He quickly glanced towards the origin of the sharpshooter to find the dark figure slinging the rifle over his shoulder and relaying a two finger salute before running off behind a baggage carrier.

Derek gritted his teeth as he and Alexis rose to their feet. He would have to wait until another opportunity presented itself to pursue the would-be assassin. With the immediate danger deferred, the crew of Glamour Girls Inc. quickly ran up to assess the situation. Courtney was in front of them all leading the charge.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

Alexis looked around as her breathing became more stable. "Yeah, I think so."

"What was that?" Courtney asked.

Derek nodded and pointed to the now vacant area where the sniper waited. "A sniper. He was over near the baggage area."

Courtney looked over at her production assistants and addressed them all together. "Call the cops! Tell them what happened and to get their asses over here ASAP!" He lifted his eyebrows. He hadn't seen this side of Courtney before. She was demanding and in full control as she assessed the situation and exercised her authority. "Are you okay sweetie?" Her caring nature was stepping in.

Alexis nodded. She then looked down at her dress, it was ripped along the sides exposing her thighs. "This outfit has seen better days though."

Courtney smiled. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure it'll compliment the designer's intentions anyway." She looked around and then addressed the group. "We're gonna call it a wrap for today, but don't pack anything up. I'm sure the police are gonna want to examine the area and question everybody that was here." She then looked back at Alexis. "Why don't you go back to the trailer and change, we'll take care of everything here."

Her bottom lip was trembling when Alexis said. "I'm sorry Courtney."

Courtney put her arms around and kissed her on the forehead. "Don't be. I'm just glad you're still with us."

He watched as Courtney sent the Glamour Girl model away. The look of purpose refilled her face. "Are you okay?" He asked.

She was angry and frustrated. "No!" She snapped back. "I almost lost another

friend. First it was Indy, and now this!"

He stepped up and placed his arms around her. He squeezed her gently hoping it would comfort her. She succumbed to his gesture for a moment before she stepped away. He knew she was protecting her image as Olivia Lockehart's protege. He respected that. He also respected her decision to call the cops. It would be a futile gesture because he was sure the sniper left no traces of his self. "It's probably a good thing to call the cops, but I can tell you right now they're not going to find anything."

"Why is that?" She asked.

Derek took in a deep breath hoping his news would not frighten the girls anymore than what they were, but his gut knew otherwise. There were other concerns beginning to surface in his mind. "This was a warning shot."

"What the hell do you mean a warning shot? He almost killed Alexis up there."

Derek shook his head in disagreement. "When I realized what was happening, it still took me a little time to get to Alexis. If he wanted her dead, he had enough time to do it."

"Maybe he wasn't completely set up?"

"Maybe. If it is the same person that broke into my house and killed Indy, he's a pro. Pro's don't usually have poor set ups. They're usually very detailed oriented. Their target area is scoped out weeks in advance and they have a daily diary of their target, or targets in this case. The guy we're dealing with knows everything about Glamour Girls." Derek quickly remembered the two finger salute. It was like the sniper was introducing himself. "He also knows everything about me."

"So what does that mean?"

"It means we're up to our necks in trouble. We gotta find this guy and fast, or the next picture anybody takes of us will have a chalk outline around it."
