IN THROUGH THE TRAP DOOR
|
THE ARTIST’S EYE By: THOMAS EMMON PISANO
For you to grasp the impossible vision and hold it in your mind for as long as it takes to understand the facts of nature, this is seeing. The eye is the tool of the imagination, to let the mind do all the seeing beyond what your senses grasp, this is the first step. Bring your meager talents to their fullest potential without a thought of what you are doing, to smell the rain in the air and feel autumn coming the following week, to be surprised by a flock of birds on the rise, and seeing the beauty which is the first butterfly of spring, these are some of natures gifts to the imagination. Feeling the love of nature in your hands after you have set in motion the first brush stroke, and forgetting what is in your pallet. The joy of knowing that you have communed beyond that, which is discipline and moved into the realm of love and understanding. Suddenly, you are awakened to that which the Zen masters have tried to give us a glimpse of through their realizations. Then waking in the morning of the next day with a feeling of growth and satisfaction in your heart because you finally know what it means to be an artist. Behold the painting in the first stroke and knowing the story in the first word, which is spoken. As a fragment is like that of the whole of your creation, see it in the first motion of your bringing forth, like a leaf is to the tree. To love something beyond yourself and to know selflessly that you are the one person who matters more than any thing in existence, to love your self through your form of expression. You must become the artist and the creator, to be an essence of that which is Divine. Why do we call god the creator? To create is to be that which is of god. Create beyond that which is of self; create beyond the human ego and the need for recognition. Create for the heart of the world and its eyes, let the world see your vision and forget the rules of drama. Paint, draw, write, and dance what has to be danced, say what has to be said, and listen to the voice inside which is the muse, and let it guide your hand in beauty. Become inspired and stay in that state of holiness. Go beyond the artist and become the priest of that which will be created, let the brush and paper be the sacrament of life and beauty. Let it be the instrument of the god within, never debase the holy work, which you are meant to bring forth into the world, let beauty be created for its own sake, and forget the petty wants of the world and commerce. Paint, sing, and love with the eyes and soul of a child, be pure of heart and beauty will follow in all your endeavors.
