Excerpt from Acheron
The woman looked out towards the jagged valleys that made up little canyon. It was one of the least explored and least inhabited parts of the planet but she had braved its dangers many times with the man she travelled here with now. She allowed herself a small ironic smile then turned back to the transporter where the man was waiting for her. Just beyond him was a large black sphere with an opening in the front. She walked toward it. In the distance she could hear the sound of the other vehicles, which were following them at a discrete distance.
‘You don’t have to come.’ She didn’t look at the man she spoke to.
He didn’t reply, he was signalling to the driver to start the engine and move the transporter to join the rest of the squadron. Without looking at her he walked past her to inspect the inside of the sphere.
‘Carlesh?’
He turned to look at her, his eyes meeting hers contemptuously. ‘What? Do you want me to congratulate you on your wedding Ambassador? I hear it was wonderful!’ He was doing a good job of sounding scornful instead of bitter.
‘You should have been there; I hear it’s a custom to cry at weddings. You’d have fitted right in!’ Well if he wanted a fight…
‘I find it more funny than sad when someone sells herself to get what she wants!’
She bit back an angry retort and let him continue.
‘Are you getting in or what? I’d hate to think that after all you’ve been through to get this job you would waste the opportunity!’
‘Well Captain, let’s go then!’ She put one foot inside the sphere. ‘You really are a fool, nothing had to change!’
He laughed at her as she turned her back on him to climb in. ‘I almost feel sorry for my brother!’ He put his own foot on the edge of the opening. ‘You really are a whore.’
He expected her to hit him but all she did was smile. If he was this bitter he obviously still loved her and she didn’t think it would take him long to come around. He’d never been able to resist her or stay mad at her for long. Anyway, she really couldn’t understand his problem; it was obvious she was just using his brother and it wasn’t like she would care if he married someone else as long as he still wanted her! She had pictured the two of them laughing behind Sanjian’s back but it was no use trying to kid herself; she would have done it anyway, however she had pictured Carlesh’s reaction.
